Pentatonic scale

The pentatonic scale is a scale comprising five tones, as opposed to the Diatonic scale's seven. It is of much use in jazz, and is present in many styles of non-Western music.

Construction

The basic pentatonic scale is built with degrees no. 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the major diatonic scale. The common name for such a scale is major pentatonic scale. Below, a major pentatonic scale on C:
