The medieval period is a period in the history of western music spanning from the around the fall of the Roman Empire to the start of the Rennaissance in Europe. Approximate dates would be from circa 400 - 1400.

Monophony and Polyphony

An essential distinction has to be made regarding Medieval music; that is whether a composition's texture is that of monophony, comprising one melodic line, or polyphony, comprising two or more independent melodic lines present at the same time.
