4 Piano Pieces Op. 1 by Edvard Grieg was Edvard Grieg's first published composition. The opus consists of 4 juvenile piano pieces that all foreshadow in some way or other his mature harmonic style, while his melodic voice, for which he is so well known, is just about completely absent from the work.

The pieces

Allegro con leggerezza

Non Allegro e molto espressivo

Mazurka: Con gratia

Allegretto con moto

History

The work was written during his graduation year at the Leipzig conservatory of music, and published at C.F. Peters, Leipzig, in 1863/64. Grieg performed 3 of the pieces at his graduation recital on April 12, 1862 under the title drei phantasiestucke.
