Rock and roll, also written as rock & roll or rock ’n’ roll, is a form of music that evolved in the United States from blues, rhythm and blues, swing, boogie-woogie, big-band, country, folk, bluegrass, gospel, and jazz during the 1950's. The style subsequently spread globally and reached further development, resulting in a wide range of genres.
Instrumentation
Rock and roll primarily makes use of one or two electric guitars (one lead, one rhythm), one double bass or bass guitar, a drumset, and a piano. The genre may also make use of saxophones and other brass instruments.
